Recap of April's Small Business Training Event: Meet the Media

Meet the Media Small Business Training

Questions to ask yourself about your media activity.

  • Who walks into your door? Do just look at the categories of gender, age, demographic, etc. but do they have children? Where do their kids go to school? What do they enjoy in their free time? Get engaged and learn the specifics.
  • Who is your competition? Be aware of your competitions' activities. Are you present where they are present?
  • How do you track your business? Google Analytics is a great resource.
  • How are people hearing about you?
  • Who are you not appealing to?

How do you achieve brand recognition on a budget?

  • Word of mouth- The key is to deliver outstanding, reliable, and timely service.
  • Connect with local media (newspaper, magazines, radio, etc.). Local media is more aware of local trends and demographics and also offer affordable advertising.
  • Knowledgeable staff, a well-trained staff is critical when it comes to representing your business when you are away.

Are press releases dead?

  • No, there are several new and different ways to promote events but press releases are still relevant.

Key Themes

  • Know your audience. Google Analytics can be a crucial tool. Everyone knows google and uses it.
  • Remember to frequently step back and re-evaluate your audience because it changes often.
  • Keep your name out there. Consistency is important, think of McDonald's, Target, Walmart.
  • Educate your clients. For example, Community Impact will not offer one slot, one time advertisements because they believe that the ad will not reach the target audience and the costs outweigh the benefits.
  • Personalized testimonies and stories are more effective than blatant ads. Avoid Sale ads. Instead, go with "Jack and Mary have been married for 20 years and still eat at Café on the Square every Friday!"
  • Partner up with other local businesses, community events, and organizations. Teamwork makes the dream work!
  • Have a planned event calendar for your audience.
  • Use the University. Texas State has a great, innovative Communication Department, with eager students that want to gain experience.
