The Second Day of Christmas: Winning at White Elephant

If you have ever been lucky enough to attend a White Elephant party you may have wondered how this outlandish holiday tradition began. Although the origin of white elephant has probably been embellished through time, the story suggests that the King of Siam gave an albino elephant to a member of his court that he had grown to dislike. The King gave the "gift" knowing that the upkeep of the elephant would bring financial ruin to the recipient. Today the modern definition of a white elephant is a possession that is useless or troublesome, especially one that is expensive to maintain or difficult to dispose of. Today, western cultures have taken this folk tale and morphed it into a modern day gift exchange known also popularly known as Chinese Christmas and Yankee Swap.

One unique feature of the white elephant exchange is the element of surprise. Similar to Secret Santa exchanges, participants are not allowed to share what they have purchased. The only difference is participants could end up taking home any of the gifts that are being exchanged, it quite literally is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get (unless you steal a gift). The best part of receiving a white elephant gift is the uniqueness and craziness of it all. You could end up taking home something you will never use or something you never knew you wanted until now. Originality is the key to success with any white elephant party. To avoid being the person that arrives with a cliche gag gift; Main Street found some awesome and unique gift ideas that can be found in Downtown San Marcos!
